What is Somatic Experiencing?

Somatic Experiencing® is a body-oriented approach to the healing of trauma and other stress disorders. It is the life’s work of Dr. Peter A. Levine, resulting from his multidisciplinary study of stress physiology, psychology, ethology, biology, neuroscience, indigenous healing practices, and medical biophysics, together with over 45 years of successful clinical application. The SE approach releases traumatic shock, which is key to transforming PTSD and the wounds of emotional and early developmental attachment trauma.

SE Approach to Healing

SE offers a framework to assess where a person is “stuck” in the fight, flight or freeze responses, and provides clinical tools to resolve these fixated physiological states. It provides effective skills appropriate to a variety of healing professions including mental health, medicine, physical and occupational therapies, bodywork, addiction treatment, first response, education, and others.

I called Stephanie to make a Somatic experiencing trauma therapy appointment, and within the first few minutes of our conversation, I felt someone finally understood what I was experiencing. She took her time with me on the phone and really listened.  I had my first session. Her kind and inviting personality, along with the nature-like setting, made me feel instantly relaxed and at ease.
The one thing I noticed with Stephanie that was different than the other talk therapists was that she never tried to make me ‘think’ differently about my experience. I felt completely safe to explain exactly how I felt.
My first session with her was very profound. I remember towards the end of the session, she had me look out into the meadow. As I was looking at the trees and listening to the birds, it seemed like everything got brighter. I even asked her “did it just get brighter” and she just smiled and said I don’t know, maybe”. I think she knew something had shifted within in me. I do recall feeling a shift later day that was quite noticeable. The best way to describe it would be that I felt lighter, less concerned with things, more hopeful of the future, like there was less heaviness then there was before. It was quite an amazing experience, as if someone just turned the light on and all the darkness faded away.  
When I first came to Stephanie in the summer of 2017, I was still dealing with the after-effects of a trauma that I experienced toward the end of 2012. Before working with her, I would have hesitated to call my experience a trauma due to the fact that nothing traumatic really ‘happened’. It was more like a perceived sense of something traumatic happening. And even though I felt threatened and emotional dysregulated directly after the event, everyone I talk to for comfort, would say “but nothing happened in the end, forget about it."

" Recently, I became aware of how certain unpleasant memories, from many years ago, would unconsciously slip into conversations with people I had just met. 
The stories would catch me by surprise. I thought I'd found resolution with these past experiences. And yet, here they were, popping up again. I thought I was ready to move on and not identify with these particular memories. It completely baffled me.
It was when a friend told me about SE and how it enabled her to 'let go of' trauma from her past. I knew it was something I had to try. 
After my first meeting with Stephanie Pappas, there was a notable change in my body.  It's difficult to describe. I felt very relaxed. It was as if I finally let go of holding a live wire. The noise in my head and body had disappeared.  My body was finally able to let go of the stress that the stories seemed to trigger. The particular stories of difficult times are no longer relevant. The stories themselves seemed to have dropped from my awareness and take some effort to recall. There’s a sense of peace and expansion in it's wake, I feel free. I’m grateful for my SE sessions with Stephanie and the deep level of calm and heightened clarity I continue to experience.
Also, I feel more clear and energized  since I saw you. Decided not to go to parents for Father's Day. I called instead and it was rather difficult. However, I felt centered, remained calm, held my ground and was not rocked by my dad's uncooperative behavior.
And you won't  believe it! One night I forgot to wear my mouth guard to prevent my jaw from clenching.... and I slept through the night without needing it. My jaw has been so much more relaxed, amazing. I could never have done that before my Somatic Experiencing Trauma Therapy session with you."
